What is NRI status under Indian income tax law?+

Under Section 6 of the Income Tax Act, an Indian citizen becomes an NRI for a financial year if they spend fewer than 182 days in India during that year. For seafarers on foreign-flagged vessels, days spent at sea outside India count toward this threshold. Your NRI or Resident classification determines which global income is taxable in India.

How does Seatime calculate my NRI days?+

You log each voyage with a sign-on date, sign-off date, and vessel flag (foreign or Indian). Seatime sums days outside India across all voyages per financial year and compares the total to the 182-day threshold. A day-by-day calendar and a full calculation breakdown are available at any time.
